Oria/Cuba 2001 - Cuba - Santiago

See also my Cuba 2000 page

After saying goodbye to Jaime, Teresa and Fernando, we flew to Santiago to meet a few friends and take a trip to Baracoa. Santiago is the second largest city in Cuba with around 1 Million inhabitants. It's also called the gateway to the Caribbean. See also Links on Santiago

Nice tropical touch, eh?
The departure hall of Havana Airport's Terminal 1 looks more like an open air cocktail bar
Steve, who doesn't like flying too much, was actually less afraid in this thing than in a modern Yak-42
Our plane was a venerable Russian Ilyushin 18. They have one of the worst safety records
Ah, mi Santiago! I love this city
On the terrace of Casa Granda, Steve and I enjoy the sunshine and warmth
The only drawback to the Casa Granda is that the only Cubans there are waiters
The Casa Granda on Parque Cespedes, where there's always a live band

At the time of my second visit (this time), Parque Cespedes was undergoing renovations
The splendid view of the Catedral
Just around the corner is the Claqueta bar
High above the streets of Santiago
Santiago should do like Barcelona and make the bay an attractive place again. But, alas, they're lacking the money
The secure bay made this a top spot for building a city. Unfortunately the bay area is not a pretty sight
Yulima is quite a character. She's only 19 but with a strong head

Steve with Yulima, an acquaintance from my last trip to Cuba

We had a lot of fun with this pocket-sized hurricane
Yulima, about half my size, on Casa Granda's terrace. Sometimes trying to get Cubans to the roof meands trouble with security
La China wanted to come to Baracoa with us, but she was only 17 and wasn't allowed to
La China, half Mulata, half Chinese. A friend of Yulima's
We got lots of looks, being the only non-Cubans to use camiones
We used camiones to get around, the main means of transportation for the Santiagueros
