After much trouble with a failed Internet purchase of two AOM flights to Cuba, Marc finally managed to get us two Iberia tickets to La Habana on Christmas Day 2000. The trip was planned to last until Jan 9, 2001, but, as many things in Cuba, this turned out differently. Almost all Images on this Website were taken with my Minolta Dynax 700si and Marc's Canon EOS. They were scanned onto a Kodak Photo CD. You can click on them to see a bigger version. There are basically two ways to travel cuba. One is to go all-inclusive where you'll be treated to a brightly colored plastic wristband, immaculate beaches, splendid buffet meals and a well-organized trip. Of course, this does not have anything to do with Cuba at all and can be had equally in the Dominican Republic, or Gran Canaria for that matter. The other possibility is to get hold of an edition of the Lonely Planet Cuba Guidebook or the Footprint Cuba Handbook and set off on your own. We opted for this one and made no advance reservations whatsoever.
Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean, just touching the Tropic of Cancer in the north and reaching all the way south to Haiti and Jamaica. The population of roughly 11 million is spread throughout the country, with 2 million living in Havana (Ciudad de la Habana) on the north coast and 1 million in Santiago de Cuba on the south coast.
More information on Fidel and Cuban history can be found on the Links page.
